Case Study: Food & Beverage Photography for FiLLi Cafe

Client case study. Some brands need a hundred dishes photographed. FiLLi Cafe needed something harder: imagery worthy of a brand built on a single, iconic drink.

The client

FiLLi Cafe is one of the region’s great café stories. In 2004, Rafih Filli took over his father’s small cafeteria in Dubai’s Al Mamzar area and rebranded it under his school nickname — then created the drink that would define it: Zafran Chai, a saffron-infused milk tea. Two decades on, that one drink has carried the brand from a neighbourhood tea stall to a chain of 70+ cafés across 14 countries, from Qatar (its first international outlet, 2016) to the United States — while staying, at heart, a “tea and talk” spot. The UAE’s karak culture has few better-known names: FiLLi has even been featured among Lonely Planet’s best karak spots in the country.

The photographic challenge

Beverage-first brands are the deep end of food photography. A cup of chai has no garnish to hide behind: the shot lives or dies on the colour of the brew, the steam, the glassware and the mood around it. Saffron chai in particular has a precise amber-gold tone — get the white balance or styling wrong and the drink that defines the brand simply doesn’t look like itself. Add a menu of breakfasts and street bites that must sit convincingly beside the hero drink, and you have a brief where consistency matters as much as appetite appeal.

What we delivered

• Styled beverage photography — steam, pours and layered-glass shots that make a hot drink read instantly on screen, with the chai’s saffron tone kept true to life.
• Menu-item photography shot in one consistent visual language, so drinks, breakfasts and bites all feel like one brand.
• Format-ready exports for the places café imagery actually works: menus, social media and delivery apps.

All styling was handled in-house — plating, propping and camera-ready builds are part of every My Pinch of Wow shoot, not a second supplier. That single-team approach is how a large menu keeps one look from the first frame to the last.

How we photograph café brands

1. Brand first. Before the shoot we agree what the signature items must communicate — heritage, indulgence, energy — and build a styling language around it.
2. On location. We shoot in the café’s own environment with professional lighting brought in, so nothing travels and everything looks like the brand’s real world.
3. Action where it earns its place. Steam, pours and splashes are directed deliberately — a moving shot of a signature drink works as hard on a delivery app tile as it does on Instagram.
4. Every format from one session. Menu crops, social sizes and delivery-app specs are exported from the same set of masters.
