Splash photography brings drinks to life with dramatic motion and precision timing. Discover expert techniques and camera settings to capture the perfect splash shot.

Splash photography, especially when it involves drinks and coffee, is a thrilling genre that blends technical precision with creative spontaneity. From freezing mid-air droplets to showcasing the drama of impact, splash photos are bold, vivid, and full of life. In this blog, I’ll walk you through my process using a Fujifilm camera, with tips on setup, camera settings, and techniques to capture that perfect splash moment.
Before diving into the camera settings, let’s talk setup. For drink photography, choose a minimal, clutter-free background. A clean environment lets the splash be the hero of the shot. I prefer using a flash setup—usually side-lit—for better shadow definition and highlights, creating a more dynamic image.
Capturing the splash at the right moment requires speed. I typically start at 1/500s and may go faster depending on the lighting and size of the splash. The faster the shutter, the sharper the freeze.
Use a mid-range aperture like f/5. It gives enough depth of field to keep key splash elements sharp while maintaining a soft background blur.
Always aim for low ISO to minimize noise. I usually shoot between ISO 100–400, which is easily achievable with flash.
Autofocus often fails with fast-moving splashes. I rely on manual focus, pre-focusing on the spot where I expect the splash to happen.
Start with the Flash white balance preset if you’re using artificial lighting. This minimizes color casts and keeps your tones accurate.
Splash images benefit greatly from editing in RAW. Increase clarity, enhance contrast, and fine-tune color balance. Remove distracting droplets, boost highlights, or even combine multiple splash shots for that perfect composition.
Drink splash photography captures a fleeting moment that’s both chaotic and elegant. Each splash is different, each image a story. With the right setup, good lighting, and a little patience, you can transform a simple drink into a high-impact visual experience.
So, grab your Fujifilm, prep your lighting, and get ready to make a splash. The results just might surprise you.
